Literary devices and their functions

Imagery-A tecnique in which the writer uses to create a mental image.

Symbol-Something used for or regarded as representing something else.

Irony- The opposite outcome of what is expected to happen.

Satire-The use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule or the like in exposing or denouncing vice or folly.

Motif - a reoccuring subject or theme.

Allusion- A casual or passing reference.

Stream of conscienceness- The characters personal thoughts and perceptions stated throughout the story with no particular structure.

Interior monolog- A form of Stream of conscienceness. Writing that represents the inner thoughts of the character.

Flashback-A look back at events prior to the present situation.

Foreshadowing- A glimse of what is about to happen before the actual event.
